#Book Review: Chaos In Romance, Sexuality and Fidelity by Raksha Bharadia

The first thing which struck a chord with me is the word ‘Chaos’ in the title. With the world undergoing rapid changes, the dynamics of relationships are also changing.

I have been married for 13 years. When I tell the same to my friends or acquaintances, some admire our bond and there are some who raise their eyebrows with the unsaid question in their eyes, “how can you be married to the same man for so long.”. I have witnessed extremely mushy relations where romance takes a back seat under the pressures of daily chores and responsibilities. A lull sets in. Partners don’t find each other attractive; some even start losing trust and few others start looking for those lost glitter in the glamour of the outside world.

This pandemonium is heard but talked out loud. This book written by the editor of the famous Chicken Soup Series, Raksha Bharadia is a detailed research about such intricacies of human relations. This book does not provide titillating sneak peaks into sexual escapades rather delves deep into the reasons behind the break down of relationships which is the foundation of any peaceful society.

This well-researched piece revolves around the changing dynamics of relationships in India. Raksha has taken up the task of conducting exhaustive interviews with people from different walks of life like psychologists, marriage counselor, medical experts to flesh out insights as well as factual evidence. They also throw light on the rise of discontent and conflicts in interpersonal relationships. The book also explores aspects of the growing incidents of divorce and the challenges associated in fulfilling the vows of marriage. Raksha’s research also gives insights to the expectations of men and how having a self- created persona of their women is giving rise to disappointments leading to the breakdown of marriages.

Relationship are a complex labyrinth and they are continuous state of change. The one element which keeps them intact is trust and loyalty. This book also goes in depth answering some of the reasons of the surge in divorces and extra marital relationships and why relationships lack emotional quotient.

Overall , its an interesting book and it deals with some of the topics which till date people don’t like discussing in open due to social taboos and personal stigmas. This book can serve as a guide for people who are looking for some answers or guidance but are hesitant to seek professional help.

Thank you Raksha for sharing this book with me.

I will give it a 4 stars out of 5
