SPOOKY READ FOR HALLOWEEN #Book Review : SHEETS by Brenna Thummler

I have been fascinated about Halloween ever since my best friend Rina started sending me pictures of her Halloween decor from the U.S. Though the celebration was foreign to me as traditionally we celebrate Diwali and Kali puja, I was fascinated by the spooky lamps carved out of pumpkins and the celebration of darkness with so much fun and frolic.

This year’s Halloween Decor at Rina’s residence- Fresno, USA (2019)

This is the beautiful time of the year when fall sets in. We book lovers look for recommendations to travel in to world of fantasies, darkness, ghosts and ghouls and yearn to delve into the world of mysticism.

While I have been saving my share of books for the spooky October month, I also came across ‘SHEETS’ which had good reviews and lot of recommendations .

SHEETS by Brenna Thummler is a perfect read to celebrate the Halloween.

Thirteen years old Marjorie Glatts  hates two things. One is laundry because that is the stark reality of life and ghosts which are unreal.

She is in charge of her family owned laundry business . Her day features of rude customers, unbearable PE classes and obnoxious Mr. Saubertuck who is determined to take over Marjorie’s Glatt’s Laundry and start his own business.

Glatt’s Laundromat

Wendell is a ghost who lost his life at a tender age. Wandering in the ‘land of ghosts’, his life revolves around ghost therapy, dependency on his sheets to keep his identity under wraps and an undieing need to seek purpose in the human world.

Marjorie and Wendell’s paths meet while Wendell enters her laundry chamber. He creates tents out of the laundry clothes for fun and invites trouble. Situation worsens when Mr. Saubertuck tries to sabotage Marjorie’s business by ruining the clothes of the customers with coloured dyes.

Marjorie slowly starts losing her customers and is left with one choice to save her family. She decides to sell her laundromat to Mr. Saubertuck. Wendell comes to her rescue with his army of ghost friends. They terrorize Mr. Saubertuck and flees him away from the town.

Ghosts terrorize Mr. Saubertuck

Marjorie cleans up all the clothes with ‘ghosturiser’ , a solution presented by the ghosts which removes all stains. Once again her customers start returning to her with new laundry and she reestablishes her business.

It’s a beautiful tale of friendship. The novel evoked hope and happiness in the realms of darkness. Who knows may be we can create a bridge between the natural and unnatural world.

It is a fantastic graphic novel with brilliant illustrations. The storytelling is very engaging and heart-warming. It is a sweet spooky read for a chilly evening to snug into your warm blanket and tuck yourself with this book.
