Durga Puja is the biggest emotional association with the roots for any Bengali across the globe. But this year things are different. The celebration is lacking the pomp, revelry and most importantly the joy of uniting with your loved ones during this pandemic outbreak.
But ‘Those Delicious Letters’ by Sandeepa Dutta Mukherjee has helped in reducing this melancholy in the air. Here is a book which brought with it the niff of Bengal which we all yearn for being ‘probashi’ Bengalis and try to immerse in it during this celebration.
The plot revolves around a forty year NRI Shubha Sengupta, mother to two and married to Sameer, a very successful techie. She struggles with the regular problems of a middle class family, of which is her marriage which has lost its warmth and lustre. Quitting her successful career as an architect to take care of her family, she is associated with a start-up trying to make its mark in the publishing industry.
Amidst all this, all of a sudden she starts receiving letters from a stranger from Kolkata. These are letters from an old lady, ‘Didan’ reminiscing the past, filled with nostalgia and recipes of Bengali delicacies.
The story has been interweaved beautifully around the life of the main protagonist Shubha and the past life of Didan and how Shubha discovers meaning in her life by retracing Didan’s life. There are so many similarities within the dissimilarities between the two lives which builds the intricate layers of this novel and makes it such an interesting read.
The endearing character of Shubha adds to the sweetness of the story. I found her character so relatable.
I loved the mystery built through the letters of Didan and the beautiful glimpses into the old Bengal, talking about its traditions, seasons, emotions and most importantly the food.
Each recipe tucked brilliantly in the folds of the story is a delight.
Over the years I have always devoured @bongmom’s blog to churn out something for our Sunday lunch and this book was no less of a beautiful journey.
I am glad I picked up this read during Durga Puja. It definitely comforted me and provided me joy though my heart yearned for all the celebrations which I have been missing so badly this year.
Thank you @bongmom for this wonderful treat. After all, no Puja is complete for a Bengali without good food and happy ‘adda’ times.
I would strongly recommend this book to readers who love food and good piece of nostalgia soaked in Bengali culture.
Happy Puja to all.
